April 29, 2025 – AAPHI Faculty Coordinator Dr. Durell Callier took a group of AAPHI Scholars and friends of the program to Baltimore, MD. Here the group got a “behind the scenes” tour of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. Robert T. Parker, Chief Curator & Director of Interpretation, Visitor Experiences, and Education for the Lewis Museum, led the tour along with Imani Haynes, Curator. AAPHI Scholars got to see permanent exhibits and hear about the museums plans for utilizing new spaces and creating new exhibits. After the tour, AAPHI Scholars got to meet with additional members of the museum staff to learn more about the museum’s unique mission in Maryland, and about the specific role that each member of the staff play in making the museum successful.

Following the museum visit, the group went to the historic Fell’s Point waterfront area, where they met with Mr. Lou Fields, a local historian, author, activist and CEO of Black Heritage Tours, for the “Frederick Douglass Path to Freedom Walking Tour,” where they were literally able to walk in the footsteps of Frederick Douglass, to see where he lived and worked in Baltimore, and learn more about Douglass’ ties to the area, where he spent his formative years, and the important work he did as an abolitionist in 19th century America.
