1. Mellon Scholars Program at the Library Company of Philadelphia’s Program in African American Hisotry

The Library Company of Philadelphia’s Program in African American History (PAAH), with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is pleased to announce the Mellon Scholars Program of fellowships, internships, and workshop for 2017-2018. These competitive programs are designed to increase the participation of scholars from underrepresented backgrounds and others in the field of African American history prior to 1900.

The Mellon Scholars Fellowship Program aims to promote research in the collections of the Library Company and to enhance the production of scholarly work in African American history of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Fellows are expected to conduct the majority of their research in the Library Company’s collections but may also use the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Fellows must be in residence for the entire term of the award.

Valued at $10,000, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) offers a Minority Dissertation Fellowship annually for racialized minorities, including African Americans, who are completing a PhD program in anthropology. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents, attend an accredited university, be admitted to degree candidacy, have AAA membership, and possess a record of outstanding academic achievement. Online applications must include a 1,000-word anthropological research proposal and an endorsement letter.

2. Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship

Funded by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship is available for $2,000 to African American graduate students attending accredited U.S. colleges to obtain a master’s, professional, or doctoral degree. To qualify, candidates must be current NAACP members, have U.S. citizenship, be 25 years old or younger, demonstrate financial need based on federal poverty guidelines, and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

3. Barrow Minority Doctoral Student Scholarship

Deadline: May 1st

African Americans pursuing a PhD in journalism or mass communications could qualify for $2,500 through the Barrow Minority Doctoral Student Scholarship presented by the Communication Theory & Methodology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC). 4. Beinecke African Scholarship Program

Since 1996, the Beinecke African Scholarship Program has been one of the most prestigious PhD scholarships for African American males and females interested in studying wildlife ecology or conservation. 5. CVS Caremark Pharmacy Scholarship

In partnership with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the CVS Caremark Pharmacy Scholarship is presented for $5,000 to African American scholars who are pursuing a PhD or PharmD in the pharmaceutical sciences. As a Minneapolis-based law firm, Fredrikson & Byron P.A. grants the Minority Scholarship for $15,000 annually to outstanding graduate students who are obtaining a JD or PhD from an accredited U.S. law school. 10. GlaxoSmithKline Science Achievement Award

The GlaxoSmithKline Science Achievement Award is another of the PhD scholarships for African American females and males granted through the UNCF. For this $3,000 award, applicants must be enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. graduate school to study biochemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacology, genetics, microbiology, botany, zoology, or a related scientific field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students who are medical interns and nurses aren’t eligible.

11. Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

Inspired by the founder of the Institute for Women and Technology, the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship will award $7,000 annually to minority female students, including Africans and African Americans, who are studying computer science or engineering at the PhD level. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, enroll full-time or part-time at any accredited university worldwide, and demonstrate a passion for computing. The Hubertus W.V. Valued at $20,000, the Koch Scholars Program Graduate Scholarship is one of the most lucrative PhD scholarships for African American males and females permanently residing in the United States. 14. Jeanne Spurlock Research Fellowship

Granted by the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the Jeanne Spurlock Research Fellowship provides $4,000 to minority PhD or MD students, including African Americans, who are conducting research related to substance abuse and addiction. Eligible U.S. fellows will spend 12 consecutive weeks working full-time under a child and adolescent psychiatrist researcher during the summer. The Merck Graduate Research Dissertation Fellowship is awarded for up to $53,500 through the UNCF to African American scholars who are pursuing a PhD or ScD full-time with a major in the engineering, physical science, or life science disciplines. 17. McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program

Deadline: January 15th

Offering a $5,000 tuition waiver, and $12,000 stipend annually, the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program is provided by the Florida Education Fund (FEF) to African American doctoral candidates who plan to teach college coursework. Eligible candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree, hold U.S. citizenship, and attend one of the nine participating Florida institutions full-time. Fellowships are especially encouraged in agriculture, biology, business, chemistry, engineering, math, and physics.
